Need an Ancient Egypt Timeline? Look no further.

Here it is: I put together this handy infographic for your homework needs, as a teaching tool for KS2 and up, or simply as a quick reference. This Egyptian timeline has you covered from start to finish.

The Egyptian Empire existed from 3000 BC to the Ptolemaic Dynasty. Egypt's history is one of many rulers and diverse periods, of fascinating civilization and culture, which met its final end when it was defeated by the Roman Empire.

When you study the chart, you'll probably notice that some of the dates overlap in certain instances. Why? During those times, pharaohs may have ruled simultaneously in different parts of Egypt. In other instances, we can't be quite sure of the dates. It shows the difficulty researchers face in committing to exact figures.

Quick fact: Dating Ancient Egypt's Dynasties is still ongoing. It's a difficult task simply because it all took place so long ago. The timeline table is based on archaeologists' conventional estimates. They are subject to change as new information is unearthed.

Looking for Queen Cleopatra? You'll find her near the bottom in the Graeco-Roman Period. You may be surprised to learn she ruled so late in Ancient Egypt's long history!

Please feel free to print this timeline and/or embed it on your own website. If you know of anyone who might need a copy, be sure to share this page!

This review is from: Zet and the Egyptian Amulet Mystery (Ancient Egypt Classics) (Kindle Edition)
I am reading this story to my sixth graders. They are quite pleased. They like the characters and it gives the study of the ancient world a bit of glamor and interest that it might otherwise not have. Of course the book is easy enough for them to read it to themselves but this book has created interest in historical fiction which did not exist before. Several students want to borrow the book.

THE LETTER "M" in Hieroglyphics

What's the hieroglyphic symbol for the letter M?

The ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol for the letter M is the owl. Ancient Egyptians honored the owl as it protected humans as they passed from this world into the spirit world after death. The owl symbol can be used in words like mice and moon.

Egyptian Fact - Papyrus

Papyrus: pronounced "pa-pie-russ"

Paper made from the papyrus reed, the bulrush that grows along the Nile banks. Ancient Egyptian paper makers sliced the pith into long strips and made a double layer sheet – placing one layer of strips running down, the other running crosswise. Using a mallet, they pounded the paper. The plant's sap made it stick together into a single sheet.

Egypt exported papyrus until the 12th Century AD when rag and wood pulp paper began to replace it.

What Does Ostraca Mean? Hint: It's Ancient Egyptian

Ostraca: pronounced "oh-stra-ka"

Osctraca is a thin, smooth flake of limestone used by ancient Egyptians for making notes, sketches and calculations.

Basically, in the Nile Valley, people had access to a lot of this type of stone. Limestone is unique in that it flakes very easily when you chip at it. Hand-sized flakes could be separated from the larger block. They would be extremely thin and flat. This made them perfect for writing quick notes on, especially since very few people had easy access to papyrus paper. You might call Ostraca the 'sticky-note' of the ancient world!

FACTS: 5 Facts About Ancient Egyptian Eyeliner

In ancient Egypt, black eyeliner was called KOHL(pronounced "cole")
ancient Egyptian cosmetics jars and tools
Ancient Egyptian cosmetics jars and tools.
by Jean-Pierre Dalbera
Read on for 5 Fascinating Facts about Khol
  1. How it was made: Ancient Egyptians made their traditional eyeliner cosmetic by grinding together a combination of malachite (a bright green mineral), lead, and oil or fat with a mortar and pestle. The liner was then stored in a pretty container.
  2. To apply khol eyeliner, the wearer used a small stick. A line was traced around the upper and lower lids, and extended toward the ear. The cat-eye, taken to the extreme.
  3. Unisex: Both men and women wore kohl.
  4. Special properties: Ancient Egyptians believed khol liner had magical and healing powers.
  5. Ancient sun protection: Khol probably helped reduce the sun's glare, the way a football player uses black cheek stripes beneath their eyes. This would've been pretty useful, since sunglasses hadn't been invented yet!

DISCOVERY: Lost Egyptian City Found

Watch the video below and be amazed as a diver swims around fallen pieces of an ancient civilization.

The lost city was called Heracleion by the Greeks, and Thonis by the Egyptians and is believed to be 1,200 years old.

Dr. Franck Goddio, an underwater archaeologist, is the man who found this amazing discovery.

Why did Heracleion/Thonis end up under water? What could have happened to hide this city for so long? A natural disaster?

No one knows for certain, and perhaps we never will.

Zet and the Egyptian Temple Mystery by Scott Peters Preview

Zet and the Egyptian Temple Mystery

I've spent the last few days working on the final touches for Zet and the Egyptian Temple Mystery. Writing Book 3 in the Zet mystery series has been intense. I love this book a lot. I think it's the best in the series so far.
Zet and the Temple Princess Mystery is Zet's third case. If you've read the first 2 books, you've met Zet and know that he's the oldest of 3 siblings. He's learned things from his past adventures. But this case is different. It's far more challenging, and Zet is taken completely out of his element. I learned a lot about Zet as I wrote his story. He surprised me several times!
image: Egyptian winged sun god
Q: I really liked Zet's friend Hui. Will he be in more stories with Zet?
Ah, Zet's best friend, the trickster! As it turns out, Hui plays a big role in Book 3. When the two boys get together, trouble generally follows. This story is no exception. What made it even more fun to write is that they leave their town of Thebes and travel north to solve the mystery.
Zet and the Egyptian Temple Mystery is just ten days away from release, and I'm starting to get super excited. I can't wait to hear what you think of the book. I hope you'll love Zet in his new challenge as much as I do. You'll also learn more about Kat, Hui, the Queen Mother and Pharaoh's family. Surprises are in store!
But if you're eager to read Zet's story now, I have a special treat for you. A sneak peak of Chapter One:

Zet and the
Egyptian Temple
Mystery

By Scott Peters

Chapter One
Strange Visitors

12-year-old Zet grabbed at the pair of lean arms that tightened around his neck. He tried to shout, but his shout came out as a gasp. He lurched forward, pulling the boy with him. The two of them fell to the ground. They rolled several times across the sun-scorched paving stones.

Ancient Egyptians enjoyed a varied diet.

Meat: Wealthy peopled tended to eat more meat than the average Egyptian. Less fortunate people dined on fish and legumes.

Eggs are included here, however they were somewhat uncommon. Any eggs eaten would have been from geese, ducks or certain birds, but not chickens. Chickens were unknown in ancient Egypt until very late.

Milk: Given the Egyptian heat, milk had to be consumed shortly after milking or it would spoil. Milk, therefore, was made into cheeses and fermented products like yogurt.

Instead, they found them using Google Earth.

Over the past decade, Google Earth's satellites have been busy snapping pictures of the earth's surface from space. It turns out that man-made structures are very noticeable from the sky. They tend to have straight lines, not normally found in the natural world.
